
Sergeant Major Shevchenko, as the leader of the towing vehicle unit, ensured the successful mid-level maintenance of the 2nd Company’s vehicles through his dedicated work.
- January 14 – April 1945: His unit’s vehicles traveled 2,500 km from the Vistula River to the Oder River without accidents or breakdowns.
- January 21-22, 1945: Under heavy enemy artillery and gunfire, he led five vehicles carrying fuel, lubricants, and ammunition to the Lask region (Poland), supporting his regiment in an unequal battle against a large enemy force attempting to break westward.
- As a technical specialist in the 1st Battalion: He repaired two captured enemy vehicles and put them into service.
- Training Contribution: Within seven days, he trained Red Army soldier Korzh to drive a vehicle.
- Maintenance Work: Using captured spare parts, he effectively organized minor repairs for his battalion.
- Battle of Prietz (Germany): Under poor road conditions and heavy enemy fire, he swiftly and efficiently delivered ammunition to the battalion’s firing positions.
- March 6-20, 1945: During battles to clear the enemy from the right bank of the Oder River (Narthenhagen-Zinzlow and Polejuch Forest), he transported ammunition under heavy fire using battalion vehicles.
For exemplary execution of combat tasks on the front lines against German invaders, his discipline, and his bravery, he was recommended for the Order of Labor Glory, Third Class.
Due to the illness of the regimental commander, Lieutenant Colonel Loshak, the commendation was verified by Acting Commander Major Rezhkov on April 3, 1945.
