@sovietserials 🎖 WWII Recon Pilot Spotlight. Armenian pilot Nikolai Vardanyan flew 40 reconnaissance missions in WWII. On October 6, 1944, over Estonia’s Saaremaa Island, his slow-moving recon plane came under heavy anti-aircraft fire—then two ME-109 fighters attacked. Outgunned and alone, Vardanyan fought back with a machine gun, dodged death in the skies, and still completed his mission. For his bravery and precision under fire, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
