As a T-34 tank commander of the 2nd Battalion, Comrade Afanasyev demonstrated himself to be a disciplined, brave, and proactive Red Army officer, showing excellent mastery of his duties.
From April 18, 1945, in battles near Berlin, in the regions of Regenmantel and Buchholz, he displayed exemplary courage and the ability to defeat the enemy. He maneuvered skillfully on the battlefield and delivered fierce, accurate fire. He was among the first to break into the enemy positions, destroying:
- 1 self-propelled artillery piece
- 3 armored personnel carriers
- 1 heavy howitzer battery
- Over 30 Hitlerites (enemy soldiers)
In the battles within Berlin itself, his tank actions were bold and decisive. He was the first to cross a water obstacle and enter Berlin. During the fighting, when the platoon commander was killed and Afanasyev himself was wounded, he took initiative, leading the platoon and capturing 17 city blocks in Berlin. In the process, they eliminated:
